Frieda's Place

Donation protected
Frieda's Place has provided hot prepared food, groceries, clothing and unconditional love to Chicago's New City/Back of the Yards community for nearly 30 years.  Located within the same century-old parish grounds at 51st & Laflin as sister organizations Su Casa and The Breathing Room, Frieda fuels her soup kitchen without her own 501c3 status or grants but through donations, volunteers and devotion.

Within their space there are lush gardens for learning the joys of growing and connecting with the earth, as well as temporary lodging for volunteers and participants. Currently meals and resources are offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.  Many pieces come together to make it work - the Seventh Day Adventist Church prepares hot soul food, Trader Joe's contributes groceries and every third Sunday there's KFC- but there are basic needs and hopes to be met with your donation.

If you can't contribute financially, please consider other ways to help.  Frieda's is looking for extra beds and bedding, a washer and dryer, carts and containers, soap, sanitizer, toiletries, shelving, cabinets, and other items that can improve this shared home.  Do you write grants? Can you setup a website?  Do you like pulling weeds? They could probably use your help.

Frieda also volunteers at the local senior center, is on the board of directors at the nearby women's shelter, works as a school crossing guard and is the proud grandmother of twelve.  She runs a simple operation that has worked well at achieving its mission for decades and is not looking to change it. She simply wants to continue to serve and support her community by providing basic resources to those in need.

Thank you so much for everything, big and small, you can do for this community and for the continued movement to uplift black communities at large.
