Freedom for Mayra

Donation protected
On May 12th 2019, Mayra was released from the Mesa Verde ICE detention facility. Mayra had been detained for four months since she had lawfully entered the United States seeking asylum. She was only released because our community was able to raise the $8,000 in bail funds needed. On May 13th 2019, Mayra moved into Micki's house in Oakland. Since then, she has build a strong community in the Bay Area through church, English classes and community events.

Mayra was granted authorization to work earlier this year, and is eagerly seeking employment. Because she will be working outside of the house, she can no longer reside with Micki, who is in the highly vulnerable population for COVID-19. Mayra is taking this opportunity to seek a more permanent living situation and has found an apartment. Our family will continue to support Mayra's asylum application and will always consider her part of the family. We are calling on our community now to help us ensure Mayra has the best chance to succeed, without experiencing any economic insecurity, as she moves into a new home. Please consider donating to help Mayra as she awaits her final court hearing, originally scheduled for May 2020, but postponed to March 2021 due to COVID-19.

Donated funds will be used to help Mayra pay rent for the first couple months and help build a safety net for her as she finds stable employment. Any donation amount is very appreciated. We have done it once before and we can do it again- please consider supporting Mayra and her human right to justice and freedom!
