My granddaughters have been in the custody of The Florida Dept. of Children and Families since June. At the end of May, their mother took off to Florida with the children. She was arrested for Felony Battery with Strangulation in Florida on June 7, 2020. Florida authorities insisted that I move to Florida to get them. I went directly to Florida and spent weeks there trying to get temporary custody. At the end of June, Florida authorities told me to return to NJ to have my home inspected if I had any hope of returning the children to NJ. Interstate in NJ was closed due to Covid 19 and remained closed through late August 2020. These kids were caught in the middle of two states with NJ totally non-functional for months. Finally in August when NJ ICPP (interstate) reopened they explained that NJ PARENTING LICENSING ACT STATUTE 30:4C-27.3 requires me to be a licensed fostercare provider despite being their grandmother. To obtain this license they informed me may take an additional 5-6 months. Governor Murphy's office was contacted several times to no avail. Congressman Frank Pallones' office is aware and has contacted NJ Dept Children and Families on my behalf.
The two oldest children Ryleigh (age 9) and Briella (age 7) are together but are currently in their third foster home since June. Ryleigh told me in a virtual visit that they sleep in their school uniforms because they have to get up early for school. The youngest Jaelyn (age 5) is separated from her siblings and is in her second foster home. There is a fourth sibling (age 2) who is also separated from his sisters. These innocent children should be immediately returned to NJ. They should not be languishing in the system and placed with strangers in a strange state.
I am incurring legal costs in both New Jersey and Florida. I have to return to Florida for a court date September 29th. I am hoping to have the NJ PARENTING LICENSING ACT amended to protect NJ children and get them immediately to qualified relatives for care. The emotional and financial cost of this travesty is immeasurable. On behalf of my granddaughters I am thankful for any assistance, advice, or help.
