Our darling boy Fred was born with two very rare eye conditions; Anophthalmia & Microphthalmia, meaning the left eye never developed during pregnancy, and the right eye is smaller than usual. This was discovered after birth which as you can imagine was a huge shock to our family. The cause of this is still unknown.
Ipswich hospital quickly referred Fred to Great Ormond St Hospital where he is under their specialists care. At only five weeks old, he had his first prosthetic implant in the left side to expand the eye socket (socket rehabilitation). The implant gets replaced monthly, each time with a slightly bigger mould until a prosthetic eye can be inserted.
Tests are still ongoing for Fred’s right eye in regards to whether there is vision as it is still developing, however it is likely he will need surgery to correct the positioning of the eye.
The care Fred has already received from the consultants at GOSH have been amazing. We have a long journey ahead of us emotionally and physically as a family, so it is really reassuring as parents that he is, and will be in safe hands throughout his childhood.
Despite this, Fred is a happy and healthy boy who we are so obsessed with ❤️ He loves his sensory toys, listening to music and holds on to mummy and daddy’s hands so he knows we’re close to him.
Any donations will go towards travel costs to GOSH for future appointments, sensory toys, baby groups, swimming lessons, massage therapy etc anything we can do for him to help with his early development, as well as his continuous care throughout his life - big or small it’s hugely appreciated. If you aren’t able to contribute, sharing Fred’s story with your family and friends would mean the world to us.
Thank you for taking the time to read Fred’s story. We will update you on his journey ✨ Andrew & Hannah
