The heat in our primary greenhouse is not working. Which has impacted on our winter growing season. We grow and distribute fresh produce to organizations and families in need across Frederick County.
We're a newer organization, that being said, this is only our second season in the greenhouses that the county has offered to lend us. Many larger, more established growers use artificial light to supplement their growth through the winter. We're not. The cost of additional equipment and running lighting is more than we can handle at the moment. Last year, we managed to have a semi-successful winter season without it. We've got it on the horizon, but there were a lot of things in the works before COVID. The additional issue of heating will make it impossible. We managed to push through the main growing season, running our partner sites as well as our own. With a limited number of staff, volunteers, and resources. Inconsistent heating has probably set our winter season a month back at this point.
I'm collecting donations to try to get this thing going. Perhaps to help provide a "pillow" for operating costs while things are slow.
If you're interested in making a donation, please send me a message. This project is very important to me because I have been "there". To be honest, I'm not too far away from being there again. Trying to help where I can.
