Frank's Second Lung Transplant

On March 21, 2019, Frank Glover, Jr. was the recipient of a double lung and liver transplant. After 41 years of battling Cystic Fibrosis, his lung and liver function had fallen too low, but he got a new lease on life.

Unfortunately, after 4 years of recurring infections and gradually worsening function, Frank is back on the transplant list for a new set of lungs. His lung function is lower than it was before the first surgery (down to 13%), and this time he is on too much oxygen to leave the hospital while he waits for ‘the call’.

Frank is currently waiting in UF Health Shands Transplant Center in Gainesville, FL, where he has been for the last month. He is almost two hours away from his home in Orlando which he shares with his wife, Grace. On top of the astronomical medical debt incurred from the first transplant, the next one adds another round of costly surgery and physical therapy, in addition to continuing lifelong anti-rejection medications, follow-up procedures, his usual CF prescriptions, etc. And now, the distance from home has added additional time, energy, and financial burden on Frank and Grace. They will likely need to get an apartment in Gainesville so Frank can be close enough for frequent post-surgery check-ups.

This time around, we’re optimistic that ‘the call’ will come quickly. His ‘score’ on the list should be even higher than last time due to being young, being a retransplant diagnosis, and being held in the hospital on such a high volume of oxygen.
