The holiday season is a time for family, celebrations, and recharging. For those of us who are fortunate to have warm homes with ample food and piles of holiday gifts, it’s also a perfect time to think about how we can lend a hand to others in our community who are hurting. I recently had the privilege of meeting Deb Busa, a special ed teacher right here in Framingham. Deb has three fabulous sons and a loving husband, Mike, who owned a landscaping company. This year, Deb and Mike won’t get to spend the holidays relaxing with their sons. Instead, they will spend it in and out of the hospital as Mike battles stage 4 prostate cancer. Deb has been working to support her family through this crisis, earning an hourly wage to carry the health insurance and pay their bills.
If you know Mike and Deb, you know they are humble people who would not easily ask for help. So let’s help them anyway. They need us and we need to show up for them.
I am looking to raise $10,000 to help Deb and Mike with expenses so they can spend this time together, thinking about what really matters, rather than wondering whether they’ll be able to pay the next heat or electricity bill. My ask is a simple one: 1,000 people who agree to donate $10 each. (Of course if you want to give more I won’t stop you!) That’s just one Dunkin’ run or Panera soup you might need to skip to give this family a holiday that they’ll be able to remember for a lifetime.
We may be a city now, but at its heart, Framingham is a village. Let’s pull together and make some holiday cheer.
