This GoFundMe account for Foundation Asheville is an ongoing effort to raise money for yearly expenses such as insurance, maintenance, and of course the occasional concrete pour.
The Foundation Spot is a DIY skateable sculpture park built by volunteers. The park is open to the public and free of charge. Any money raised has been through in-person cash donations, art shows at PUSH Skate Shop, park events, and this GoFundMe page.
The Foundation started on the down-low in 2008 when locals started building on an abandoned foundation of a destroyed building in a neglected corner of the River Arts District. Until a few years ago, the threat of bulldozing always loomed on the horizon. In 2015 the property came under new ownership and the owner recognized the uniqueness of the Foundation. Since then, we have been allowed to continue building our park and our community. Much like tourists travel to Asheville for the hikes and the breweries, skaters travel from all over to ride the Foundation.
The current property owner only has one stipulation - we must provide our own insurance. As you can imagine, insurance for a skatepark is not exactly cheap. This year (2019) our insurance policy will cost $8,111.80. As long as we have insurance, we are able to continue building, expanding, maintaining, and skating.
Under the 501c3 Non-Profit Asheville Skate Foundation, all donations are tax deductible. All proceeds in excess of the insurance policy go towards pouring new ramps and maintaining current ones.
