Fort Greene&Clinton Hill Feed Vulnerable Neighbors

Feeding Vulnerable Isolated Neighbors

 THE NEED
You enable One Community and its many partners to get food to our vulnerable neighbors while they are in quarantine.  Funds are being used to assure that seniors,  people with compromised health, people who have lost their incomes or benefits (freelancers and undocumented people) and people who are Covid-19 positive are safe and have food. Our small fund goes a very long way -- we buy tables, handcarts, bins, bags, tape, paper, toner, masks and gloves and rent trucks so that scores of volunteers can deliver tons of groceries to hundreds of our vulnerable neighbors every week.

Between March 28 and June 20,  the team has delivered 10,424 weeks’ worth of food.

THE TEAM
We are working with The Campaign against Hunger,  Recovery House of Worship, the Sylvia Rivera Pantry and other food donors, tenant association officers and other tenant leaders in public housing, The Stonewall House,  volunteers from Clinton Hill/Fort Greene Mutual Aid, the officers of NYPD's 84th and 88th Precincts and PSA 3, Duggal Visual Solutions, Agger Fish, Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo and her staff and the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership to obtain and help deliver what is needed.  The Brooklyn Navy Yard provides our warehouse without charge.   We have been invited to attend the mayor's working group on food security during the coronavirus crisis and are seen as a unique example of community-based food distribution.

THE WORK
* Weekly deliveries began March 28 - March 31 when our coalition delivered food and protective gear to 209 homebound people in public housing.  A senior: "I am grateful for the food and I really need it, but I did not expect the masks and that really shows you care about my well-being."

*  The next weeks, 331, 437,  625, 762 households were served. On June 6, 1,179 households received a week’s food.

60 + volunteers are on the team.

*  To stabilize our increasingly complex operations, we have hired 15 unemployed community residents who do not have access to public benefits – mostly formerly incarcerated public housing residents –  to work part-time.

THE OTHER NEEDS
We have been able to respond to other calls for assistance.

*  NEW: Most important, 200 homebound seniors are receiving regular wellness check-in/companionship calls in a program we initiated with the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership and Clinton Hill/Fort Greene Mutual Aid.

*  In response to a request from the New York Health + Hospitals Cumberland Gotham Health Hospital, we donated 1,000 face masks plus 500 in a second round.

*  With Shaquana Boykin and Ashley Baldwin we coordinated donations of food for the staff of Cumberland Hospital from Greene Grape Provisions.

*  We coordinated the distribution of 2,050 face masks to local food workers and 335 to volunteers doing food distribution.

 *  2,474 face masks have been given to food recipients.

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS
With your support we are charging across a bridge as we build it.  Your donations enable us to be resolute, dexterous, responsive and creative and to achieve great results.

Expenditures to date include:

$8,262.79 for tables, bins, handcarts, packing materials, exterminating and cleaning supplies for our distribution center

* $4,141.98 for protective gear

$856.00 for printing supplies

* NEW:  $3,500.00 truck rental and auto

Gloves were donated by Prospect Drugs.

More is needed every week to keep going.

We are counting on you to next fund our purchases of more tables for safely receiving, sorting, bagging more food, insulated bags and coolers for food safety, sanitizing and bagging suppliescarts for moving food in the warehouse and around public housing developments and basic supplies like paper, toner, markers, clip boards and packing tape. We are now moving dozens of whole pallets of food  on trucks we rent.

Laurie Cumbo writes, "As Council Member of the 35th District, I support One Community's efforts to get critical resources to our senior citizens and those most in need as soon as possible. I have been overwhelmed with calls from our seniors who want everything from fresh food and vegetables to hand sanitizers and masks or who, frankly, just want someone to talk to.

The time to act is now ."
