UPDATE
After finally tracking down cctv footage, it transpires that Tom was hit by an ordinary push bike. The cyclist also can’t be traced and this puts Tom in the unfortunate situation of not having any viable options for compensation. Further to this, the NHS are only happy to fund dentures. Given the number and location of teeth Tom stands to lose, this is something specialists have advised against. Tom has begun root canal procedures and will also require bone transplants and implants. The total cost of the dental work has been quoted at £25,000-£31,000, entirely self-funded.

Recently my younger brother, Tom, had been on his way to a gig with his friends . It was the start of what promised to be a good night when someone recklessly wheelied a bike into his face. With Tom covered in blood and sprawled on the floor, the cyclist left.

After being rushed to A&E and some pain relief free rummaging around in his mouth, Tom finds himself up to 8 teeth light. It is still early stages but he faces the prospect of dentures (he’s only 30) or significant dental work to repair and salvage his teeth. As yet there is no timeline on when Tom will have his teeth back, but he is waiting in significant pain and on a liquid only diet.

To add insult to injury, Tom and his childhood friends had been saving for the holiday of a lifetime together for several years to collectively celebrate their 30th birthdays. Given the risk of infection and uncertainty around what/ when things will be sorted, he is unable to go. In a final nod to his youth, Tom was yet to finalise any holiday insurance (we’ve all done that and hoped for the best). That means instead of a summer to remember, Tom finds himself with no holiday, no money and no teeth.

Unfortunately, the current economic climate means the tooth fairy won’t chip in for this one but I’m hoping your generosity will help Tom and his family out in a tricky old time.
