For My Nephew’s Future

On April 24th, 2025, we lost my sister, Shwetha, her older son, Dhruva, and her husband, Harsha, in a tragic and heartbreaking event. In the weeks since, we’ve been navigating an overwhelming mix of grief, shock, and uncertainty. I’m glad to share that my younger nephew is safe and I’ve officially been granted legal guardianship over him by King County, Washington. We’ve now moved to Pennsylvania, where we’re beginning a new chapter together.

My nephew is incredibly bright and curious, showing an early interest in robotics and STEM subjects. He’s resilient beyond words, and deserves every chance to heal, to grow, and to thrive. As his uncle and now full-time guardian, I’m committed to giving him the stable home, therapeutic care, education, and enrichment he needs.

Right now, I’m in the second year of a PhD program. I love what I do, but I was not financially prepared to become a full-time guardian overnight. While my parents are supporting us in many ways, as Indian citizens, they are only allowed to visit the U.S. for limited stretches of time. They have limited resources, and when they are with us, the costs of their basic needs, visas, healthcare, and travel fall entirely on me. There was no financial safety net left behind either. Right now, every expense—from therapy to after-school programs to simply keeping the lights on—seems to be adding up quickly.
