For “The Ketcham Family”

Madi Vargas is an incredible asset to our community and we want to support her in reciprocity for her service as a civil servant, as well as a friend. Madi currently works as the Latino outreach coordinator for the City of Lafayette’s Arts & Cultural Resources Department. Madi worked in BVSD schools for over 10 years, before having to resign to be a caregiver to her husband. She lost her husband, Steve Ketcham who was 35, just before Christmas to a long battle with heart failure and related complications. Their precious 5 year old daughter, Samantha is currently in preschool and she will start Kindergarten this year but has already learned so many hard life lessons. We want to be sure that in their loss, Steve’s family are allowed to grieve rather than fear for their security. Madi grew up in this community, attended Centaurus High School, and continues to call Lafayette her home. She was Steve’s primary support through his last decade of life. He and Madi faced his health issues stoically together. Steve had been a young recipient of a heart transplant, after surviving a severe viral infection that caused irreparable damage to his heart. A few years into their marriage, Steve’s body began to reject his heart transplant. Madi stayed by her husband’s side for months long stays at UCH Anschutz, Duke University Hospital, UCLA Hospital, and many other hospitals, in wait for a new heart and therapies. Sadly, Steve could not receive another transplant. They returned home and Steve rallied as well as he could. Navigating the health care system was an ongoing struggle in their lives together for nearly a decade. Through his endless health challenges, Steve continued to be a loving and dedicated husband and father to little Samantha.

As a community, we can join efforts to support Madi and Samantha, a beautiful family who belong here in their town, which becomes increasingly difficult to afford to live in. We will not allow a single mother and child to slip from the community to which they belong because they have fallen behind in the aftermath of such loss. Please send your love and financial support. Madi actualmente trabaja como coordinadora de alcance latino para el Departamento de Recursos Culturales y de Arte de la Ciudad de Lafayette. Trabajó en las escuelas de BVSD durante más de 10 años, antes de tener que renunciar para cuidar a su esposo: Steve Ketcham, quien tenía problemas de insuficiencia cardíaca. Con tan sólo 35 años, Steve falleció justo antes de Navidad, luego de una larga batalla contra complicaciones de su enfermedad. Su preciosa hija de 5 años, Samantha, actualmente está en preescolar y comenzará el jardín de infantes este año, y ya le ha tocado aprender muchas lecciones difíciles de la vida. Queremos estar seguros de que, en su pérdida, a la familia de Steve se le permita llorar, en lugar de temer por su seguridad. Madi creció en esta comunidad, asistió a Centaurus High School y continúa llamando a Lafayette su hogar. Ella fue el principal apoyo de Steve durante su última década de vida. Él y Madi enfrentaron estoicamente juntos sus problemas de salud. Steve había recibido un trasplante de corazón, luego de sobrevivir a una infección viral severa que causó un daño irreparable a su corazón. Unos años después de su matrimonio, el cuerpo de Steve comenzó a rechazar el trasplante. Madi permaneció al lado de su esposo durante meses en UCH Anschutz, Duke University Hospital, UCLA Hospital y muchos otros hospitales, a la espera de un nuevo corazón. Lamentablemente, Steve no pudo recibir otro trasplante. Regresaron a casa y Steve se recuperó lo mejor que pudo. Navegar por el sistema de atención médica fue una lucha continua en sus vidas durante casi una década. A través de sus interminables problemas de salud, Steve continuó siendo un esposo y padre amoroso dedicado para la pequeña Samantha.

Como comunidad podemos unir esfuerzos para apoyar a Madi y Samantha, una hermosa familia que pertenece a este pueblo, en el que cada vez es más difícil vivir. No permitamos que una madre soltera y su hija tengan que mudarse de la comunidad a la que pertenecen. Enviemos nuestro amor y apoyo financiero a Madi. ¡Muchas gracias!
