For Guilford College Housekeepers

What Is the Situation?

Guilford College housekeepers who had worked here for fifteen years were just outsourced. On May 7, after only a few weeks’ notice, the housekeeping staff at Guilford College were outsourced to a company based in Missouri which most had never even heard of, but which is now their new boss. They did not even know that outsourcing was being discussed before these two sets of employers signed the contract.

They are losing:

 --employer contributions to retirement
--seniority (they are all being treated as brand-new employees of the new company, even those who had worked at Guiilford College for 15 or more years)
--the amount of paid time off they had earned by being long-time employees
--any raises Guilford College provides as part of the Compensation Plan the community created to ensure more just and transparent salaries and benefits

Starting in August they will have a choice between inferior health insurance or more expensive health insurance.

Fortunately, Guilford College negotiated for the current housekeepers to keep their current wages and tuition benefits, but future housekeepers who are hired to work at Guilford College will not receive either of those.

Why Should We Be Concerned?

Since Guilford College markets itself as being based in core values like equality and diversity, it is especially troubling that this decision which primarily affects low-wage women of color was decided by wealthy white people without those employees being in the room.  It is also troubling that this decision increases wealth and income inequality, crucial problems facing the world today.

What Are You Asking US To Do?

We love Guilford College, and are calling Guilford College to act like its best self.

Because some members of the college leadership refuse to answer fundamental questions and refuse to take responsibility for the harm they are causing, we are asking the rest of the Guilford College community, near and far, to help mitigate the financial harm.
Whatever we raise will be divided equally between the 18 housekeepers who were just outsourced.

Our goal is to raise $18,000, which will be $1000 per housekeeper.

This will not fix the problem, but could both call attention to the problem and help a bit in a tangible way.

If you agree that both the process and the outcome of this decision to outsource the housekeeping staff hurt this community, particularly the housekeepers, please give what you can.  Let's show the housekeepers that we value them, not just in word, but also in deed.  Thanks!

What Will Happen with the Funds?

While a team of us put this campaign together, Maria Rosales,  Associate Professor of Political Science at Guilford College, Faculty Development Director, and long-time colleague of the housekeeping staff, will withdraw the funds when we reach the goal.  Because there are 18 beneficiaries, I will divide the total by 18 and write a personal check to each individual housekeeper.  There will be a clear paper trail that I will show to anyone who asks, including, once the checks are cashed, my bank statement.
