FOOD TO FAR ROCKAWAY

Try a simple Google search of “Far Rockaway” and you’ll retrieve depressing results. Food deserts, a forgotten neighborhood,  dilapidated seaside in New York City are just some of the references you will find to my hometown.

I was raised in “Far Rock” by a single mother of two until the age of 18 when I went off to college.  My childhood in Far Rockaway is fondly marked by an above-average public school education, lots of friends, playgrounds, Rockaway Beach & “the boardwalk,” and of course, long rides home on the A-train.

New York City is the epicenter of commerce in the world. All native New Yorkers proudly endorse the neighborhoods that reared them. In Far Rockaway, Queens, your neighborhood moniker infers disregard, even at times amid its own. Far Rockaway is indeed far in terms of its geographic location within the city, and accelerating economic development in this community inarguably seems far down on the list in city government.

While the general neglect may have been embryonic in the eighties, when I lived there, it has now fully materialized.

But we will not forget Far Rockaway, especially now, during the COVID-19 global pandemic.  I reached out to Queens Royal Priesthood, my childhood friends, who already do amazing work on the ground  --->  Queens Royal Priesthood.

Food to Far Rockaway will support the community’s youth who are adjusting to homeschooling and our elderly neighbors who even under normal circumstances have minimal access to fresh food.

Please join us in spreading the word.

We have assembled small teams to shop for and package as many fresh sustainable meals as we can. Our goal is to provide 500 meals to local families in Far Rockaway, Queens.  QRP is a 501c3 organization.  All donations are 100% tax-deductible and every $1 will make an impact.  All residents of Far Rockaway, New York are eligible to receive free meals.
