Food for Thought for the Homeless 2022
Donation protected
Valentine’s Day 2016, a friend and I ventured out into the bitter cold with a car full of food and gifts for the homeless. We intended to pass out several backpacks (food/care packages that we had put together) to whoever looked like they could use some food and a few extra things.
This project, FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR THE HOMELESS, is a platform where I and others from the Montreal community attempt to connect with our humanity and see those that need to be seen.
My name is Verona Sorensen, and I am a professional painter interested in infusing my life and the lives of others with beauty and humanity through art and projects like these.
The FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR THE HOMELESS package distributions generally occurred a few times a year until the pandemic hit. In re-igniting the project, here's hoping we can give a little compassion to those living on the streets of Montréal.
Each outing may have a different focal point depending on the collected items. One outing, for example, included long coats for women.
With the last few drives, each bag was generally valued at $75. If you want to donate a care package to someone on the streets, you may do so here. Whatever you wish to contribute is perfect. This Gofundme platform is for those who cannot participate in person but still want a chance to engage. You are welcome to contribute whatever you like... $20, $30, or $40. And, of course, you are also welcome to donate a whole bag if you are moved to do so. Everything helps!
Generally, a package includes;
a fold-up backpack, wool socks, new underwear, a Tim Horton's gift card, a packet of kleenex, a bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner, a toothbrush, a toothpaste, dental floss, a toothbrush protector, a sketchbook, a pen and pencil, pencil sharpener, an erase, plastic utensils, homemade sandwiches, salads, celery and carrots, fruit, pastries, and chocolates.
These packages are unique because they contain a sketchbook that can be used for writing and drawing, a place where a person can express, reflect, and keep creative.
Thank you to those who have already participated. It’s genuinely warming to the heart to see many people getting on board through the years.
Let's see if we can dive back into it once more!
