Flying Fox Pups in need of your Help and Support
Donation protected
Welcome to our GoFundMe page. We are Townsville Bat Carers, a vaccinated, permitted and dedicated group of experienced wildlife carers specialising in Flying Foxes and Microbats within Townsville (North Queensland, Australia) region. The 2020 baby session has kicked off and in the coming weeks and months we will have orphan pups come into our care, as well as injured adults. At the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, we will be faced to fund between $5,000 to $10,000 to adequately feed the pups in our Soft Release Cage. Well over 100 flying foxes came into care over the 2019/2020 baby season, due to human and environmental circumstances. Over the last two years we have lost thousands and thousands of flying foxes due to heatwave events. This means hundreds of orphaned pups have come into care. As volunteers we are having to fund raising and releasing the pups ourselves.
Flying Foxes are a MAJOR keystone pollinator of the Australian bush and are critical in ensuring the health of our incredible Australian Eucalypt forest and amazing ecosystem. Each flying-fox can disperse up to 60,000 seeds (from fruit they have consumed) across 50 kilometres stretch of land in one night. As well as seeds, flying foxes help pollenate flowers. Pollen sticks to their fur while they feed off nectar of flowers, then as they fly off, they ae able to pollenate many trees over long distances.
All funds raised will be used to purchase Wombaroo Flying Fox Protein Powder, suitable milk formula powder and the kilos and kilos of fruit, So much fruit! Where possible we will endeavour to source fruit at a low cost or at no cost however we need to be especially mindful to provide fruit that has a good sugar to fibre ratio ensuring we are providing a balanced, nutritional diet for these soon to be independent Flying Fox. Apples and pears form 2/3 of these pup’s fruit intake while in care, and are not grown locally in the tropics, leading us to purchase at higher prices than you may find down south. We appreciate all donations we receive, even $2 is remarkable! Any questions, queries, suggestions please ask away, we’d be happy to answer. Please also follow our page on Facebook Townsville Bat Carers - for updates and pics of our batlets in care. We cannot thank you enough for your support
