FLOOD VICTIMS OF CAIRNS - Holloway's Hub

Hi my name is Rennae and I have been volunteering alongside Daniel (Bear Grills), Pat, Renee A and Stevie who are coordinating the Holloways Beach Hub (84-100 Wisteria Street), along with many volunteers to support all flood affected residents in the beaches and surrounding suburbs. This is the most devastating natural disaster we have experienced, a 1-in-100 year flood. Hundreds of residents in Cairns, including Dan himself, have been impacted. Nearly 1000 homes were flooded, with over 500 homes experiencing up of 1 metre of water through them, deeming these properties (likely) uninhabitable.

We have been taking donations, helping to house people, delivering essential items door to door to those in need throughout Holloways and the surrounding beaches. Along with coordinating with authorities to get important issues addressed to help our community move forward day by day.

The beaches and suburbs affected by flooding in Cairns include Holloways, Machens, Yorkeys, Redlynch, Caravonica, Lake Placcid, Kamerunga Villas and so many more communities up north!

The Holloway's Beach Hub (with many volunteers involved) urgently needs more items such as water, bread, hot meals, first aid kits, mozzie repellent and coils, and cleaning equipment. There are only so many donations small businesses can give out (they have been absolutely spectacular and we are extremely grateful for their generosity), however supplies have been exhausted. Now we need your help please!

If you live outside of Cairns and would like to help but are unable to be here on the ground assisting, this is the best and most practical way you can help all of the residents impacted by these devastating floods.

Once the clean up is complete, there will be a need for new furniture such as beds, cupboards, tables & chairs, white goods and toys. Over Christmas and New Year and well into January & February, this would be a spectacular way to try to bring some joy and normality back to people’s lives. We thankyou for any kind words or donations of any kind.

We will get through this challenging time! We appreciate everyone who has offered support… it has been heartwarming to see how kind and humble the community has been throughout this ordeal. We will continue to drive around with basic supplies for those who are unable to get to the Holloways Hub, as many residents are currently stranded without transport. We have many wonderful volunteers assisting us and will continue providing necessary services to those residents who have been affected, for as long as possible.

We are coordinating with Liz and other agencies for additional support regarding the onerous clean up task, as well as welfare checks. Together, we can all help our community rebuild their lives and their homes! ❤️
