Flint Water+ Food Christmas Drive
Donation protected
THE MISSION
For the Holiday Leader Quality & Little Miss Flint want to make it easy on people of Flint to enjoy time with their families without having to worry about purchasing food and water, and simultaneously donating funds to help families afford Mari's water filter.
BACKGROUND
The Flint Water Crisis began in 2014 when the government decided to switch from the Lake Huron/ Detroit Water in an attempt to save money. Due to insufficient water treatment, lead leached from water pipes into the drinking water, exposing over 100,000 residents to elevated lead levels. It garnered nation attention in 2015. 6 years later residents still do not have full access to clean water.

Residents have been resorting to the use of bottle water for everyday household tasks that most of us don't think twice about, such as washing of hands, cooking, cleaning & bathing. The government has pulled out all emergency support in providing water for residents of the city and now they must fend for themselves in finding water for their families daily.

Though over 7,000 of 100,000 pipes have been replaced, and the water has been switched from the Flint River (polluted) to the Detroit River again. Some infrastructures in homes are still contaminated with Lead. Upon that there has been a lot of mistrust between the residents and government, on whether the water is truly clean or not.
High lead deposits within water has led to the following:
- Rashes covering the body of babies.
- Lead poisoning leading to learning disabilities within children.
- 78 Legionnaires’ patients who initially survived their diagnosis, at least 20 have died after leaving the hospital.
- Potentially multiple cases of all the above that haven't been reported.

Along with the water crisis Flint has been among one of the nations most impoverished cities per 100,000 for the past few years, and purchasing water consistently has created a bigger strain on families.
