The American Legion Paradise 149 has been actively involved with the Fisher House since its inception, and created the local foundation tasked with raising funds to build the house. The Fisher House is a guest house for family members to use when their loved ones are in the at the Southern Nevada VA Hospital or the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Medical Center on Nellis AFB Hospital. It is similar to a Ronald McDonald House, but for the military and veterans community.
Several years ago, the Post 149 held a major food drive to stock the pantry of the Fisher House that filled a 5'x10' enclosed trailer. When they delivered the food, it was off-loaded into one of the guest rooms, which took the room out of commission for a month. The Fisher House managers had to go through a bunch of hoops to rent a storage room so they could put the room back in service. Then, two years ago, Post 149 did a toilet paper drive, as that is one of the Fisher House's largest recurring expenses. They collected a 3-year supply but didn't want them to have the expense of storing it, so Post 149 stored it for them. However, that created a legal problem for them.
As government employees, it is illegal for them to ask for donations, and since they don't have possession of the toilet paper, they are cautious about asking for some, even though it was collected for them. One of the volunteers keeps an eye on the stock, and when they get low, Post 149 simply deliver more to them without them having to ask. If they had a storage building, that problem goes away.
Because the Fisher House was a donation to the government, Congress has not authorized, nor appropriated any funding, meaning we have to raise the money to build the storage room and donate it to them. A rough estimate based on storage buildings built in Orlando and Tucson is approximately $50,000.
Fundraising efforts came to a screeching halt due to COVID, so we're now behind the power curve. Any donations would be a Godsend, and 100% of the donation will go to the cause. Post 149 will absorb any GoFundMe fees.
The American Legion Paradise Post 149 is a non-profit corporation under Nevada Revised Statutes, Chapter 82, and is a tax exempt, charitable organization under IRS Code 501(c)(19), with documentation on file. (EIN 33-1099498). All or part of your donations may be tax deductible; check with your financial professional for applicability.
