We at First Presbyterian Church of Yellow Springs, Ohio, really mean it when we say, “All are welcome!” We’re a tiny congregation humbly trying to be agents of justice and humility in the world. One way we can do that is through extravagant welcome and radical inclusion. We consider ourselves a center for our community, as well as a church, and welcome all kinds of cool village efforts into our building. We host concerts, free meals, a Little Free Pantry, plays, classes focusing on well-being, caregiver groups, celebrations of marriage and celebrations of life, Mardi Gras shindigs and pumpkin carving parties, forums on LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Church and community fundraisers. We love welcoming everyone.

To be honest, though, all does not mean all in our welcome. Our reputation must have made its way to the local bats because they decided they are welcome, too. Yes, we have bats in our belfry, and beyond—they are not so welcome indoors! Do you know how much bat remediation costs? Neither did we and we nearly fell over when we got our first quote, for over $40,000! That’s an enormous chunk of our wee congregation’s savings.

We hope to recoup some of the cost so that we can more easily continue the work of welcome we do in our small village. If you can contribute in any way, large or small, it will be most appreciated. If you can only share this GoFundMe, that is a huge help, as well. If you’re local and you’re looking for a church, we’d love to have you join us for worship. If you’re local and not looking for a church, we’d love to see you at one of our monthly Fun at First events. Thanks for helping us build and support community!
