In August of 2019 Finlay was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, he endured 18 months of chemo, either infusions or maintenance. He endured more procedures than we can count. He had officially finished his treatments in December 2020. He continue to have regular scans and they have been clean, his latest scans were less than 8 weeks ago. For the last couple of weeks Fin has been in and out of the hospital due to pain. On Monday of last week ( Sept. 27, 2021) we found out why. Unfortunately, his cancer is back with a vengeance. He has tumors on his left lung, esophagus and other very important places for breathing. This has been heartbreaking news to all us who love the mighty Fin and can’t imagine how our lives will be without him.
At this point the only treatment options for Fin are palliative. We are hopeful he will be able to have 5 radiation treatments to help with pain and his airway. He was supposed to start early this week but a collapsed lung with fluid build up (due to tumor location) landed him with an unexpected procedure and hospital stay. We have and will continue to search for ways to keep Fin on this earth. To quote Fins doctor “it’s quality versus quantity”. We choose quality, even with quality there are daily hospital visits, huge weight loss in a week and horrendous pain.
His mother, Darcy, immediately needed to go on FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) and therefore will not be receiving a paycheck. This family has suffered more than their fair share, with Darcy's (mother) Leukemia in 2014/2015, Liam's (brother) open heart surgery in 2006 and 2019, and the passing of the children's father, Gary, in July 2020.
We are asking with great humility and gratitude that you find it in your heart to allow this family to be together with Fin and not have to worry about all the financial burdens upon us all in daily life let alone the thousands of dollars of medical bills that keep accumulating.
