For those of you know know me you know how deeply I care about our democracy! For almost a year leading up to the November general elections I worked on over 15 federal races to win back control of Washington. When I found out Georgia’s two Senate races were going to a run-off I started to feel uncomfortable with how distanced I felt from the state. I realized quickly that I desperately wanted to be there, organizing on the ground, to help finish what I set out to do; fighting for our democracy, fighting for women, fighting for youth, fighting for people of color.
The only thing holding me back from this fight is the fear of being financially insecure. I know that my help there is wanted, several people have reached out asking if I could come organize on the ground, looking for young organizers who could help carry some of the weight of these campaigns under the stresses of the pandemic. Until now, I had been turning them down.
I got a call from a friend on the ground who spoke directly with the COO of the New Georgia Project and the CEO of Fair Count and when she asked them how many people they needed, both women said “as many organizers as you can find us.”
I know so much of the narrative around these races has been “Don’t come to Georgia, support organizers on the ground” but after hearing that the leaders on the ground are asking for young, seasoned organizers, I felt the only option was to go! knowing that I have the skills and the time to be putting in the work on the ground, supporting their efforts.
None of us can do what needs to be done alone. The leaders of these organizations are asking for the help of people like me, and so I am asking for your help to get there.
On Monday, November 30th I will head to the LAX airport to land in Atlanta on Tuesday morning.
I’m anxiously excited as someone has done an incredibly generous deed by covering the cost of my flight out and my friend has offered to house me for the first few nights. I am asking for your help to cover the cost of my lodging in Georgia and what I estimate will be close to $25.day for food and $30/day for transportation. I will also need to figure in the cost of housing which looks to be around $2,500 for the duration of my stay. My hope is to be able to raise enough money to work through the january 5th election and stay to make sure every vote that is cast is counted in the days following.
I’ve never felt comfortable fundraising. However, I can’t sit by and wait for this to play itself out. I know what’s at stake in this election and make this a reality I need the support of all of you. Can you make a contribution?
