“The care provider determined the underlying issue was serious and recommended an immediate C-section. One issue though, there was no doctor. The intern decided to step in and do the C-section. The baby, upon his arrival, had to take a 1 hour ride in a towel to another care facility because there was no NICU in the “best” hospital where he was born. The intern managed to stabilize the mother, or so she thought. She missed the fact that the mother had a story of eclampsia issues.
In the darkness of the night, the mother, still in ICU, fought for her life. She felt something was wrong, but hoped that the care providers were in control. In a 3 ft by 5 bed, death knocked on her door. Alone in the dark, miles away from the people she loved the most, not able to call anyone, she was engulfed in fear and perished in the empty night.”
My cousin’s death is unique, but she is not the only tragedy. This year alone, many women in Guinea have lost their lives during childbirth, something that is so natural and beautiful, now prompts fear. Hospitals do not have the appropriate personnel and systems to provide reliable care. I founded Unity Heals, an organization with the mission to improve healthcare in the poorest corners of the world. Our first project is to build a hospital in Guinea. To raise funding, we are working to create a documentary on the health care issues in Guinea.
This documentary will help with raising awareness, crowdfunding, and grants applications, which are integral in raising funds for the building of healthcare facilities. Your donations will help fund the documentary: The money will be used to purchase equipment, travel, and other basic necessities during the shoot, and whatever is not used in the documentary will be going straight to Unity Heals for the building of the hospital.
Should we reach our goal, the budget we have would break down as such:
60% - Equipment
20% - Travel expenses
15% - Post-production and festival submission fees
5% - Safety cushion in case of unforeseen complications
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND FOR SHARING!
