Over the last two months, the idea that COVID-19 does not choose a location or a social class has emerged strongly. Yet where society is deeply unequal, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic will inevitably be felt most intensely by those least able to bear the burden. In Rio de Janeiro’s “favelas”, this is becoming clear as the virus begins to enter and devastate these communities.
Brazil is the South American epicenter, where the political system is in collapse, leadership is not following OMS/WHO advice and health leadership is turbulent. Hospitals beds are full and people are dying, lacking respirators. 98% of ER beds in the state of Rio are full , which means hundreds of people are dying waiting for bed.
The growing favela hotspots, where people live in cramped conditions, are full of vulnerable people and many residents cannot even afford to adhere to the stay-at-home as they need food on the table, contributing even further to the exponential spread of the virus.

After many hours researching, I decided to raise funds for Rio Contra Corona (Rio Against Corona). The organization is a transparent and recognized initiative, managed by three recognized, well-ranked organizations Instituto Phi , Ekloos and Providencia Bank ), with significant volunteer support. They are helping 178 favela communities in Rio (i.e. Cidade de Deus, Rocinha and Complexo do Alemão), and your small action of a click on this page can really make an impact!
