The Nagawa Kids Recovery Fund For The Best Dad

Hi! My name is Rushil and I’m happy to bring good news about my dad, Praveen, who underwent surgery to remove the painful tumour that has endured for the last 2 years!

A Quick Recap
We’re from the beautiful tropical island of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. My parents are both retired and they live alone as my siblings moved to France long ago and I moved to Canada recently.
This year, tests finally revealed a tumour in his tongue. Scary news! Considering the lack of experienced specialists in Mauritius and how delicate the tongue is, we decided that getting treated in France, close to my siblings and his grand kids was the best option.

How Did It Go?
I’m very happy to report that the surgery went perfectly and further analysis revealed no spreading of the tumour! To top it all, my dad is making an amazing recovery and is back on his feet! I’m convinced that this is thanks to his exemplary lifestyle. He has practiced sports and eaten healthy all his life and looks incredible in his 70s! Truly a source of inspiration to everyone around him :)

However, my siblings and I need your help as the medical bills and follow-up treatment in France were expensive, as you can imagine.

We’re looking for €14,000 which totals roughly to $23,000 Canadian. Ouch!
  • Surgery: €11,600
  • Provision for additional treatment: €1,750
  • Additional tests and analysis: €650

A Million Thanks to everyone who has donated already!
Asking for help is really hard but I’m convinced that many will want to. Especially those who have known my dad’s legendary hospitality :)

Praveen and Mala, The Special Ones
Our home in Quatre-Bornes, Mauritius, has always been the home-base for any cousin, uncle, aunt or friends visiting our paradise island for the summer holidays.
To make every day special for our guests, Praveen would always wake up ridiculously early (5 AM) and prepare a feast for breakfast, featuring a bowl of freshly cut watermelon, mangoes and litchis right off the tree. For lunch and dinner, my parents would prepare the best dishes which felt like a gastronomic journey through Mauritius.

During his retirement, he leveraged on his passion for politics and excellent writing skills to write monthly newspaper articles about current affairs and scandals. A very courageous endeavour as the previous government was cracking down on any dissension. My dad would become famous for his bold and factual articles! People would often ask me if he was my dad and it always made me proud.

In 2025, the recently elected Government of Mauritius also awarded my father The Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean Award for his contribution to the fields of finance and information technology. A huge honour for the whole family.
FUN FACT: I even found in his old work documents a letter that he wrote in the 80s to the Director of the Bank of Mauritius, explaining why the bank should invest in at least one computer. A true visionary.

All my life, I have witnessed him giving everything while expecting nothing in return. Sometimes putting his own life in danger. He has touched so many over the years. This time we can all come together and give back to a great man who, most recently, added beating tumour to his achievements!

Ode to all the music that my dad has passed down to me...
