On March 16, 2023, Sarah Jama won every poll in Hamilton Centre and was elected our new MPP. Seven months later, Premier Doug Ford censured her – removing our democratically elected voice from provincial politics.
Sarah Jama was silenced for calling for a ceasefire in the midst of Israel’s assault on Gaza - the first politician to take up a now mainstream call.
Ford’s party won a majority government with only 18% of the eligible vote, yet can silence the elected voice of the entire riding of Hamilton Centre. How is this democratic?
On October 10th, MPP Sarah Jama called on the government of Canada to demand an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation by the Israeli government, who have continued a horrific genocidal siege on Gaza. Since MPP Jama’s statement, Israel has continued escalating its assaults, killing nearly 23,000 Palestinians.
Since then, the NDP Provincial Party and federal Liberal government of Canada have come forward alongside governments internationally and echoed the call for a ceasefire. Why is Sarah Jama being punished for having the moral clarity and foresight to do what is right? Is Queen’s Park not the arena for these political discussions?
If our elected officials can’t even defend people from violence and oppression through speech, then what protection will we have of the people? Sarah’s cause is our cause – political freedom.
Our aims are two fold:
1. Reverse the Censure vote so that the constituents of Hamilton Centre have representation in the legislature.
2. Adopt legislation that acknowledges and protects the right to effective representation for every voter in Ontario
