Many of you know the trials and struggles we've endured over the past 3 years trying to start our family. At long last, God has given us a baby boy. After years of fruitless efforts to adopt, and thousands of dollars later, baby Caleb was born on New Year's Eve. The connection has been immediate, and we're so incredibly blessed to welcome Caleb Alan Sanders to our family!
Just before he was born, we found out that birth mom had tested positive for 6 different drugs 5 days before delivery. He was born with severe contractures in his legs, a very small chin and clubbed feet. We've endured diagnoses ranging from the fact that he may not survive, to he may never stand or walk, to now hopefully just minor issues. He's recovering from surgery on his jaw now, and he has years of therapy ahead for his legs and feet. We finally left the NICU at our third hospital a little over a week ago.
As we have been making progress with him physically, we've been devastated to find out that there is someone pursuing paternity of Caleb and challenging our adoption. DNA confirmed that he is the biological father. This person is currently in jail for drug use and possession, and for battery of birth mom when she was 4 months pregnant. He's got a laundry list of arrests, and is certainly NOT someone who should have custody of a child, let alone a child with complex medical history. We now face months of court proceedings and unknown costs to fight to make sure Caleb is not placed in that horrible situation.
Now, we humbly ask for your help as we try to navigate this challenging time. It's been an emotional roller coaster, and not at all what we expected or hoped for with our adoption story. We've been praying for God's provision through this, and we appreciate the love and support we've felt from our friends and family throughout. Thank you for doing whatever you can to help us; even if that's just adding us to your prayer list. If you are so inclined, we would be extremely grateful for your financial help as we do our best to keep Caleb thriving in our loving family and away from a violent drug addict.
