Some of you know me as Caro, some as Carolina, but if you do know me, you know that if I'm asking for financial help, it's for a good reason! So before you read on, know that I don't take your generosity lightly and I'm so grateful that you'll even consider donating to this cause.
So, a bit about the cause...
For many years, a dream of mine has been to spend some time in Colombia doing volunteer work. And I've recently been chosen by an organization called International Volunteer HeadQuarters (IVHQ) to go to Cartagena (my dad's hometown) for 3 weeks and work in their Childcare program. I start on January 15, 2015. The Childcare program aims to support childcare centers (foster homes or a foundation for children with cancer) and work with kids who are in desperate need of attention, affection and education.
If you're curious about what I'll be doing, as the website puts it, "Volunteers play an invaluable role in providing knowledge, care and attention to these children and can join in with games, song and dance, reading and writing lessons, meal times and basic chores." A bit about me...
I love traveling, I love volunteering, I love kids, and I love Colombia. I come from a big Colombian family, so I'm a little biased about that last one. I was raised by a mom who took me to volunteer with her from the time I was a baby, mostly visiting foster homes and homeless shelters. From her I learned the value of giving back and that in lifting other people up, we are lifted up, too.
I was also raised by a dad who travels far and wide with an endless state of wanderlust. From him I inherited the desire to see the world in all its wonder and do good things for the people in it. Combine those two elements and you might see how this opportunity is something I'm passionate about.
A bit about what I need from you...
Any bit helps! With your generous donations, I'll be able to fund this trip and make this dream of mine come true. I start in Cartagena on January 15, so any donations before December 15 would be great!
If I could mail each of you some authentic empanadas individually, I would. But I hope that postcards and my eternal gratitude would be okay substitutes for deep-fried deliciousness.
Thank you x a million for considering pitching in to this cause!
