It Takes a Village: Helping Families in Western Jamaica Recover from Hurricane Melissa

Hello everyone,

My name is Shadreen Nicholson, and I’m originally from Jamaica (Spanish Town, St.Catherine), now living in New York. Like many of you reading this, you were either born in Jamaica, have Jamaican roots, or have spent time on the island, falling in love with its people, culture, and beauty.

In late October 2025, Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, struck western Jamaica, devastating communities across Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and St. Elizabeth. Many families have lost their homes and belongings and are now struggling without food, clean water, or essential supplies.

Why We’re Raising Funds

My family and I have organized this fundraiser to provide direct relief to those most affected. We have trusted family members and local community partners on the ground who will help us distribute supplies directly to those in need.

How Funds Will Be Used

All donations will go directly toward purchasing and delivering:

Food and clean drinking water

Clothing and toiletries

Household and hygiene supplies

Temporary shelter materials

Basic rebuilding tools and materials

No portion of these funds will be used for personal benefit; 100% will go toward helping affected families rebuild and recover.

$50 provides clothing and essential supplies for a child and parent

$100+ supports an entire household with food, clean water, clothing, and rebuilding materials, helping families start over with stability and dignity

Our Commitment to Transparency

We’ll share regular updates, photos, and progress reports as donations are spent. All purchases and distributions will be documented for accountability and donor transparency.

Boots on the Ground

I will personally be traveling to Jamaica before the end of the year to assist with distributing supplies and coordinating rebuilding support. If you would like to travel there to volunteer or assist, please reach out so we can organize efforts responsibly and effectively.
