Femme Defense Fund aims to provide Black women and femmes in NYC with safety kits consisting of stun guns and pepper spray. I have estimated that each kit will cost about $60 - $80 depending on taxes and shipping. My initial goal of $1,000 will provide 12-16 women with kits.
I have done personal research and am consulting with professionals on the most effective models/brands that are best for concealed self defense for each product. Stun guns and pepper spray are currently legal to carry in New York City and state. All kits will be delivered in person and I will send along informational materials on how to effectively use each.

On Wednesday, June 17th within 15 hours alone, 3 trans women were reported murdered. Tete Gulley, a Black trans woman, was found murdered and hanging from a tree in May in Portland, Oregon. Selena Reyes-Hernandez, a 37 year old trans woman, was shot to death in her apartment in Chicago after she told a partner she is trans. Jayne Thompson, a 33 year old white trans woman, was shot to death in Colorado in May. These are only a few of the many names we do have of too many trans women that are brutally murdered every year.
This past Monday, 19 year old activist Oluwatoyin Salau was found murdered in Tallahassee, Florida after tweeting about a man sexually assaulting her and being ignored by the police. While details of her death have not been released, her murder is likely linked to her assault (although the police disagree ((ACAB)).
The deaths of these and many other women may have been preventable had they been equipped with adequate protection to allow them time in which to escape. We owe it to Black women and femmes to give them a fighting chance at survival when no one else is around.
Black women and femmes, especially Black trans women, are constantly in danger for existing as themselves. Whether it be through misogynoir, transphobia, police brutality, housing insecurity, sexual violence, etc., black women are consistently left in vulnerable positions without weapons for self-defense. The goal is for this fund to lend a hand in providing a bit more safety for Black women and femmes.
