What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "women experiencing homelessness”? Although it simply means women without a shelter or a safe place to call home, those 3 words fail to fully encompass the nuances and difficult struggles that accompany being homeless as a woman. Homelessness experienced by women is made unique by their disproportionate experiences of gender-based violence including domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, human trafficking, and sexual assault, and is experienced both cisgender and transgender women. These women also often experience difficult struggles such as substance use, domestic violence, mental health issues, and many more underlying conditions - factors which can act as both a cause and/or a consequence of experiencing homelessness.
Hence we, the UofT Mental Health Student Association, Blankets for T.O., and Cards4Humanity, aim to raise awareness about their struggles and need YOUR help! We are student-run clubs collaborating to help women, girls, gender-diverse individuals, as well as their children across Toronto. The money we raise through this fundraiser will go towards making care packages for two homeless shelters - Ernestine's Shelter and Anduhyaun. Each care package will consist of supplies such as hygiene items, sanitizing products, mental health products, and much more.
No donation is too small, and any contribution is helpful - whether it’s donating or spreading the word about our initiative to your personal networks. We thank you for your time and contribution!
