Feed253 is a community food security project that began here in Tacoma in 2009. Each November, we hold a ThanksGIVING Food Drive, with the goal to feed as many hungry folks in our community as humanly possible. In 2018, we raised about $20,000 and delivered 1,365 turkeys and meal supplies to 10 shelters, community groups, food banks and schools, which in turn provided hot meals and food supplies to countless families and individuals here in the 253. For the first time since our inception, we also launched a Christmas effort, and provided a full pallet of canned veggies, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy mix, butter, rolls, 600+ pounds of potatoes, and 200 turkeys to organizations all over Tacoma, to be given in meal kits or served to hungry folks in our community on Christmas Day.
Feed253 is more than a food drive, though. Three years ago, we began cooking meals for a domestic violence support group at the YWCA. We realized that attendance was very low for another support group there, and launched a second dinner service. Meals are now served on both Monday and Wednesday nights, with as many as 60 adults and children relying on Feed253 for a hot meal. We also receive individual requests to help fill the "grocery gap" for families struggling to put food on the table. We provide up to a week's worth of supplies for these individual requests, to give time for folks to reach their local food banks and make arrangements for any ongoing needs.
Feed253 is 100% volunteer run, so every dollar we receive helps us continue our mission. Together we can help end hunger in the 253!
