FEED THEIR MINDS
[UPDATE 2020] Our initial Story when we started this GoFundMe page was to provide the facilities, equipment, and food to Eden School in Uganda in order to provide breakfast to the students every day for one full year. I am thrilled to say that not only did we manage to provide breakfast for ONE year but we are now in our FOURTH year! Please continue to gather with us :)

For Cdn $4,500 (approx. US $3,600) we can feed 250 young school children for ONE FULL YEAR!
Help us start a daily breakfast program for the children of Eden Standard Preparatory School at Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda in Africa.
We want to raise funds to be able to run the breakfast program for at least one full school year. We need this to happen as soon as possible.
The money raised will go towards the following:
- construct a small kitchen
- kitchen supplies including cups and cooking utensils
- jug for gathering water
- firewood
- porridge (posho)
- paying for the breakfast cook
Here is a little more information about why we want to gather and give :
Our (we are Blythe & Graziela) recent round the world adventures brought us to the beautiful and scenic Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda in Africa. We came to Lake Bunyonyi, as many do, with the intention of going on a gorilla trek for what we had been told would be a once in a lifetime experience. Luckily for us, we did have an experience of a lifetime, just not in the way that we had anticipated.
We had been travelling around Africa for a couple of months by the time we reached Uganda but at that point we still hadn't found THE spot, the one we hadn't necessarily even realized we were looking for. Lake Bunyonyi turned out to be that place for us.
As soon as the community at Lake Bunyonyi welcomed us we decided that our experience here was not meant to be about paying crazy high prices to the government for permits and fees to be in the presence of those stunning gorillas. Instead, we spent time in the presence of the amazing people at the Lake, in their community, and finding a place there that resonated with us on many levels.
One of the great connections we made was with Ronald and his primary school called Eden Standard Preparatory School. Ronald has the biggest smile I've ever seen and he's flashing it all the time, no matter the circumstances. He's a very young man who has taken on a massive responsbility. There are now over 250 students in the primary school and the majority of them either are without one parent or are double orphaned, meaning that they are without both parents. All of the children at the school are in extremely challenging living conditions, even the ones that are lucky enough to have families trying to support them. Think no food, no running water, no electricity, no clean clothes, not a single "home comfort" that we take for granted.
When we arrived at the school (which was nothing more than a couple of small brick buildings on a piece of land) the children came rushing out singing in chorus and welcoming us to their school. Our hearts were bursting!
We then spent the afternoon in the classroom listening to their singing and the end of school year assembly. These children are so adorable, curious, strong and resilient.
We had time in the afternoon to have some important conversations with Ronald and he told us about his current projects, hopes for the future, and some of the challenges he was facing. The amount of work he tirelessly puts into this school and his teaching of the children every day is very humbling. We were both forever moved by this experience. He was 24 years old when we met him!
After meeting again with Ronald, we were able to provide some advice and assistance on a couple of his projects that proved to be very valuable to him. We also had a chance to present him with some of our own ideas.
Here we are in the pouring rain in the below photo bringing Ronald some tarps and supplies to create a shelter so the (8,000) bricks that he is making (in the above photos) can dry during rainy season. These bricks are the beginning of new buildings for the school.
The tarps and supplies made it possible to get all of these bricks dried and ready to be burned in the oven above. We then arranged for him to purchase firewood to burn the bricks.
And here are the bricks burned and ready to become much needed buildings.
This is all the lead up to how the Feed Their Minds breakfast program for Eden Standard Preparatory School has come to be. These children need food and this simple porridge breakfast will change their whole world. Most of them do not eat all day long and we clearly saw evidence of that at Eden School. Other schools that are more established in the Lake community and throughout Africa have these breakfast programs in place already and the positive effect of this simple breakfast program is undeniable.
This is a photo we took at another school down the road. This is an example of the kitchen area we will build for cooking the porridge every morning. We will also pay someone to be the school cook for the morning meal.
The money raised will also be used to buy plastic cups and the kitchen supplies needed to produce breakfast for every student, every day.
The children are in school from 8am to 5pm and Ronald does his best to grow some food for lunch and provide a simple snack in the day. Many of the children do not have anything to eat when they go home at lunch and sometimes they just do not come back to school because they are too hungry. We strongly believe that having breakfast at the school will also encourage the students to get to school every day and continue with their education.
Once the breakfast program is in place the cost of running the breakfast program the following years will be less and we anticipate it to be approximately:
-$3,000 U.S. dollars per year (for 250 students!).
Africa has a way of calling to your heart and making you want to be a part of the differences that people are making there. Let's gather together and make this happen.
We would welcome any support you can provide in making this breakfast program a reality. We are going to do our very best to bring some warm, full bellies to those children every day because they deserve it!
