Support Local DC Black-owned Restaurants and Feed Protesters Striking for Black Lives
Welcome! As you may know, protesters under the leadership of local Black organizers will be striking on occupied Piscataway, Anacostan, and Pamunkey land in Washington, D.C. on Juneteenth to defund and abolish the police. Please view their website at https://strikeforblacklives.org.
We are a group of Asians, Asian Americans, and accomplices who are demonstrating in solidarity with these organizers and their demands by showing up in the way that many of us first learned to show love and care to our communities: through food.
We are abolitionists and believe that we can begin creating spaces that foster mutual aid and community care right now. We believe that solidarity is built on love and relational organizing.
Many of us are disabled, neurodivergent, and/or undocumented and understand that everyone has a role in the movement and that that role might not be on the front lines.
We are piloting an initiative that aims to honor the organizers and protesters who are fighting for collective liberation, their demands, calls from national leaders to invest in Black businesses, our own organizing principles, and food as both heritage and a tool for organizing around our collective liberation.
We are fundraising to purchase meals from local Black-owned restaurants in the DMV and deliver them to protesters. We are asking communities who are unable to participate in the strike to contribute.
This is intended to be a pilot to see if it makes sense to continue this work to support Black Lives Matter DC at future actions. After Juneteenth, we are happy to provide receipts and financial information to ensure your trust that 100% of the funds received (+ our own contributions) will be used to purchase meals from the following Black-owned restaurants for protesters on Juneteenth. If we raise more funds than we are able to spend in this timeframe, then we will redistribute those funds directly to the Black-led organizations who are organizing this strike.
