Feed Durham - A Community Love Project

Feed Durham is fundraising so that we can cook again in August. We fed close to 5,000 people in need multiple meals during our April, June and July no-contact carport cookouts, and continue to send farmer surpluses to shelters, elder/disabled communities, missions, and food banks. We're supporting local families in need by buying groceries on their behalf.

If you live in Durham, and want to volunteer, message us. There are in-person and virtual opportunities to volunteer. To volunteer in-person, you must have been in quarantine for at least 2 weeks with no signs of COVID or wearing masks at all times while in public. We encourage all volunteers to get a COVID test (for free) two days before the next cookout. We'll refer you to a free COVID testing site.

Many of you know me as a filmmaker, writer and an organizer. I also hail from a long line of master barbecue chefs. This year, on April 24th, my daughter and I paired our annual family barbecue (indefinitely postponed) with her commitment to housing and feeding our homeless community members by teaming up with a small but scrappy and determined crew of volunteers to feed more than 1,000 local folks in need, multiple meals. We prepared tasty NO-CONTACT smoked meats and sides for the Urban Ministries, Helping Hand Mission and Durham Rescue Mission.

Since April, we've cooked thousands of tasty, nutrient-dense meals every 4 to 6 weeks. All food is lovingly prepared - fresh. Nothing comes from a can or the freezer. We connect restaurants and local farmers to organizations, collectives, and food pantries - many are struggling to keep food on shelves.

RECOMMENDED DONOR LEVELS (any donation amount is welcome)
• $50 - Individual -  6 to 10 meals
• $80 - Two people - 12 to 20 meals
• $125 - Two adults + 2 or 3 kids - 30 to 35 meals

Our menu is finalized the week before we cook, based upon available produce and meat from local farms and grocery stores.

Our typical menu includes:
• smoked drum sticks and thighs
• smoked hot dogs - chicken or turkey
• baked beans - vegetarian
• brown beans w/ smoked turkey
• mashed yams
• garlic corn
• savory brown rice
• grilled seasonal vegetables (eggplant, onions, cabbage, broccoli).

We ask all personal friends and family who donate, are able to drive, and aren't showing any signs of COVID-19, to make an appointment to pick-up food from our home. All delivery addresses must be within 5 miles of the 27703 zip code. At-home deliveries will be left on door steps. You'll receive a text saying your food has been delivered. If you're home, please come out and wave.

If you want to donate money, but don't want to receive a food order, please indicate that you don’t want to receive food in your comments, at the time of your donation. Your donation will go towards produce, meat, equipment rental, and cooking supplies.

We are focused on providing organic and/or natural foods - no hormones, antibiotics, cages or pesticides. Some produce and meat are sourced from local farms. All foods are dairy-free, with the exception of butter and possibly eggs, if we get an egg donation. All foods are prepared gluten-free, with the exception of hot dog buns or other bread donations (which are optional and only come into contact with your food if you put them with your food). All foods are nut-free. Coconut oil and soy may be used as ingredients for some foods.

We wear masks, hats/hair ties, and gloves, from the time produce and meat are delivered to us. Our gloves only touch the food that we're preparing - they don't touch faces, spigot handles, door knobs, or handles. Cooking stations are more than 6 feet apart. There will be no human contact with the food from the stages of food-prep to cooking, from food packing to delivery. Anyone preparing or cooking food has been on quarantine for at least 3 weeks, showing no COVID symptoms and/or has receives a negative COVID test within 1 week of cooking with Feed Durham.
