How is Grow Calgary helping battle food security in the Calgary community through urban sustainable farming?
In the current Calgary economic climate, it is difficult for a multitude of impoverished citizens to eat in a dignified way. Grow Calgary is a 100% volunteer-run urban community farm known for providing fresh, locally grown produce to vulnerable albertans through food-access organizations. Unlike many other non-profits, Grow Calgary does not donate non-perishable canned food. Instead, Grow Calgary helps fight for the right of access to nutritious food in Calgary. Grow Calgary uses sustainable organic farming practices and donates 100% of the food grown to over 30 social agencies including the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, Inn From The Cold, Alpha House, The Drop-In Centre, Veterans Health Program and many more.
In our 6 years of operation we developed our first farm; an 11 acre parcel of public land located 1km west of Canada Olympic Park, site of the 1988 Winter Olympics. The Alberta Government has recently provided us with new farm land to develop. This new farm is located by 84 ST SE and 61 Ave SE, Calgary, AB. In the meantime, Grow Calgary has hired three summer students to ensure that our organization perseveres through this time of transition. Grow Calgary remains as dedicated to our mission to use Urban spaces to grow food for vulnerable Calgarians as a means of combating climate change and poverty as ever before.
Our Goal is to provide fresh, nutritious food to those in need in order to combat food related illnesses and elevate communal well-being in an effective and sustainable way. We invite you to help us nurture a healthier, safer and happier Calgary. Your donations will help sponsor our summer students for their work and help with a smooth transition and launch of our new farm.
We are looking for donations of $111, however anything helps!
