Let me tell you about our neighbors, the Pattons.
Elena is a former teacher turned stay-at-home mom. She's the kind of person who always has her door open, crafts ready, and time to help any child who needs it. JD is a devoted father, a retired U.S. Navy Commander, and now works for Santa Barbara County. He’s the first to show up whenever someone needs a hand. Together, they’ve built a loving home for their four children.
Directly across the street lived another wonderful family, Linda and Albert. Tragically, they both passed away just two months apart.... one from cancer, the other from complications following surgery. Their three children are now facing life without either parent.
JD and Elena have stepped in to become the children’s official guardians. As they shared, “We made a promise that their kids would be taken care of, so we’re going to figure it out.”
In June, their family will now grow from four children to seven.
While their hearts are more than big enough, the practical reality is challenging. Their home and finances will be stretched. Funds for the kids are tied up in probate and may not be accessible for years. In the meantime, the Pattons are working to expand their home, upgrade their vehicles, and create a stable, supportive environment for all seven kids.
They are stepping up in an extraordinary and selfless way, but they need our help.
If you’re able, please consider donating to support this incredible family during this transition. Even sharing their story can help. Let’s show up for a family that has always shown up for others.
