Dear Friends and Community,

I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart to seek your support for a family in dire need. The family has been part of our community for many years. They have been struggling to make ends meet for the past six months due to unforeseen circumstances that have left them facing eviction for the second time. They had to stay with their very young children in a shelter for a long period of time prior to this. As a community, we must come together to help this family secure a safe home for their children.

The husband, the sole breadwinner for their family of five, has been unable to work due to severe back problems and has recently undergone both open-heart and spinal surgeries. These health challenges have drastically impacted his ability to provide for his family, and doctors have advised that he refrain from work for the foreseeable future. To make matters worse, the family does not qualify for most government assistance (disability or cash assistance) due to their lack of citizenship (they are legal residents), further complicating their situation. The mother is currently looking for work, but it has been very challenging because of the lack of childcare for her kids while she works (they have no family here and the husband’s health won’t allow him to take care of young children) as well as her inability to speak English.

As a community, we are reminded of the words of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said: “The merciful are shown mercy by the Merciful. Be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from above.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi). In times like these, it is our duty to extend our hands to those in need, reflecting the compassion and mercy that Islam teaches us.

Additionally, Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:267): “O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned…” This verse serves as a reminder that even small contributions can make a significant difference in the lives of those struggling around us.

We have set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to help the family cover their rent and basic living expenses during this challenging time. Your generosity can help prevent them from facing eviction and provide them with a sense of stability as they navigate these health challenges.
