Loving Brother, Uncle, and Community Member in Need of Support after ICE Kidnapping at U-Haul Center

Jose S. has been a member of the Burbank community for fifteen years. Jose is a beloved brother, friend, uncle, and partner. He is particularly close to his nieces and nephews, whom he lived with for over decade and helped take care of. Jose works hard in construction, plumbing, and electrical work, helping hundreds of Angelenos. He recently celebrated three years with his partner, who he met at park in Burbank. Jose’s sister describes Jose as a very hard working and responsible man with so much care for his family and integrity. He was the sole provider for his partner.

On November 4th, Jose drove his truck to the U-Haul center in order to pick up a U-Haul for his employer. Jose parked his truck, ate his lunch, then headed out of his truck to reserve a U-Haul from the office. Before Jose could even get onto the U-Haul property, three masked agents jumped out from behind the U-Haul trucks and starting accosting him. Jose calmly asked the agents if they had a warrant. After repeating this question, four more masked agents appeared, surrounding and intimidating Jose. One of the agents took a picture of Jose without his consent. The agent said in English that Jose didn’t have any documents and didn’t have the right to be in this country. Jose calmly answered that they couldn’t take him without a warrant. The agents responded by grabbing Jose by both arms. This action caught the attention of the manager at U-Haul, who came outside to see what was going on. Jose asked to be able to get his wallet and keys from his pocket before being taken. The agents refused over and over, until the manager from U-Haul came over and took Jose’s wallet and key for him. Jose was handcuffed and taken to the Metropolitan Detention Center. The manager from U-Haul called Jose’s sister to tell her what happened.

The agents held Jose in an ice cold room for hours and repeatedly told him he zero rights because he wasn’t married to a US citizen and didn’t have a child. The agents assured Jose that if he signed these papers to be deported, he could easily come back to the United States. Jose stayed in a frigid room for hours without a phone call or medication for his asthma and high blood pressure. After repeatedly being pressured and coerced, Jose signed the document. After Jose signed, the agents sent him see the doctor working there for his high blood pressure. Jose finally called his sister afterwards. He asked her to take care of his truck, as the agents hung up the call. Jose and his sister spoke for less than five minutes.

The agents took Jose from Los Angeles to the Adelanto ICE Detention Center, then to a detention center in El Paso, Texas, and finally onto a plane to Honduras in less than a week. During this time, Jose had no possessions aside from this clothes on his back. He considers himself lucky to have had a sweatshirt, since many others he saw in the freezing rooms only had a t-shirt. After seeing the doctor briefly at the Metropolitan in DTLA, Jose had zero access to any medication for his asthma and high blood pressure. On the plane ride from Texas to Honduras, Jose and every other passenger was handcuffed the entire time. They were ordered to exit the plane in handcuffs, because the agent said they should return to their country as criminals.

We are fundraising for Jose and his family with a goal of $3,000. These money will go towards the helping keep Jose’s partner housed and for Jose to buy basic supplies in Honduras such as food, medication, and clothing. Jose is looking for work in Honduras, but is extremely limited without his truck. Jose and his family are important members of our Burbank community. We appreciate any and all support.

Los agentes llevaron a José de Los Ángeles al centro de detención del ICE en Adelanto, luego a un centro de detención en El Paso, Texas, y finalmente a un avión con destino a Honduras en menos de una semana.
