Family Feasts for Fire Victims
My name is Karlee Hawkins, and I am a senior at Chico High School. Since my freshman year, I have been heavily involved in my FFA chapter, by raising livestock, competing in public speaking contests, serving my community, and being the chapter president. Last year, I earned my State Degree and this year I am going after my American degree. For this I decided that I was going to do something to help my community in a way that will spread joy. Almost every year since I started high school there has been a new natural disaster. First it started with the Oroville Dam, then it was the Camp Fire, and then it was the outbreak of COVID-19 which has now affected my senior year as well. Being a daughter of a Cal Fire Battalion Chief, I know first hand how all of these things have affected my community and surrounding towns. We did what we could, housed evacuees and Cal Fire employees who lost their homes, and helped take care of displaced animals and livestock. But this year, I wanted to do something different. Which is why I am asking for help, to provide those who lost everything, a tiny bit of normalcy for the holidays--and most importantly, to make sure they know they are not in this alone.
For Thanksgiving, I am working directly with Shelby Boston who is the Director of the Department of Employment and Social Services for Butte County. I am looking to provide families in need with a precooked Thanksgiving dinner from Raley’s. The dinners are $70 each and include a turkey, with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, and gravy. With any leftover money I would also like to include a pie from Costco. Any donation is appreciated, no matter how big or small. Thank you.
