Families living in carpet poverty

Want to join me in making a difference? I’m raising money to benefit Carpets Like a Boss!!!! CIC in conjunction with Noah's Ark Centre, and any donation will help make an impact.

Carpets Like a Boss!!!! CIC is a Community Interest Company created to bring an end to carpet poverty. An estimated 1.2 million people in the UK live in homes without carpets or other flooring.

Working with the Mercado / Headlam Group to recycle waste carpet into people’s homes, was created in September 2023. To date the project has provided floor coverings to over 620 families in Calderdale.

One of the earliest recipients of free carpets was a young mum who'd spent 26 weeks in hospital because of a failed suicide attempt. She was a recovering alcoholic, who'd fled a violent relationship without her children.

She'd got her life back on track, found a flat and was working with social service to have access to her children. Social workers visited her flat and told her that she couldn't have access to her children unless she carpeted it. In an act of desperation this young mum hung herself.

The benefits and outcomes derived for those families have been far reaching:

* Families are still struggling with Cost of Living issues - carpeted homes are 15-20% cheaper to heat, so a significant reduction in energy costs.
* The environmental impact of our project is huge – both stopping carpets going to landfill and reducing home energy consumption.
* Local authorities and social landlords spend hundreds of millions on energy efficiency measure – yet the cheapest, most effective way of reducing bills / energy consumption is to fit carpets and underlay.
* We've seen multiple instances of children being injured, including one hospitalised and needing an operation, the social cost is huge.
* There are health issues in damp, musty homes, with dust, pollen and mites, especially for asthma sufferers.
* We’ve had mutliple instances of client bed blocking in hospital due to them not being allowed home because of a lack of suitable flooring.
* Our clients have reported:
improved mental health – a warm comfortable home lifts the mood.
reduction in social isolation – families no longer embarrassed to have family, friends round.
families reunited – for example a grandma allowed to have her granddaughter stay for 1st time.
they feel they are better tenants as they are prouder of their homes.

Keeping our project running is a challenge: we have significant overhead. This includes rent, utilities, carpet fitters to pay and quite a bit more!

Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
