In these times of solitude in our houses and time away from friends, I would like to use part of my time to be more productive in my community. We all begin to realize how fortunate we are compared to the rest of the world right now. This might be a worldwide pandemic, but people are struggling in neighboring towns just miles from our home. I would like to do my part during this time to try and make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate that have been directly impacted by this crisis.

The Open Door Shelter in Norwalk, CT has the following mission:

“Open Doors’ mission is to effectively address the causes and complexities of the homeless and working poor by providing shelter, food, clothing, case management services, treatment services, transitional planning for short and long term goals, subsidized housing, education, employment, and a path towards independence and success.”

For over 10 years my family and I have brought groceries and other non-perishable goods to the shelter on a regular basis.  When I was in elementary school, I didn’t fully appreciate the plight of others, but as I have grown older and realized that behind every face at the shelter lies a story, a family and a struggle – it highlighted the importance of this support.  I think giving money and food to organizations like the Open Door Shelter is important, especially during a time of uncertainty for millions of people.

I will be giving money that I have saved over the years as well as income I am earning from doing odd jobs over the next few months to support those in need.  I will also be dropping off food at the Shelter once week between now and the end of June.  I ask that you consider making a small donation to The Open Shelter – it is my goal to match at least the first $1,500 that are committed.

Thank you and I hope that you are all safe and healthy!
