Introducing Children To The World Of Aviation

Hi, my name is Chris, the Chairman of the Control Line Program for KidVenture. Every year I work with a group of wonderful volunteers, helping to introduce children to the world of model aviation.

Twenty-six years ago, a few Control Line modelers wanted to provide an aviation activity for the children of families attending EAA’s annual “AirVenture” convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Using their own airplanes, fuel, lines and other necessary equipment, they offered the children the opportunity to fly a real Control Line plane. This “Kid-focused” activity was so successful that it led to what is now known as KidVenture.

During the weeklong EAA convention, KidVenture volunteers help an average of 300 children a day fly an actual motorized Control Line model airplane. We fly 6 hours a day, every day of the event. While our volunteers still continue to freely donate their time, the many years of punishing training flights have damaged many of the airplanes and engines beyond repair. We are now to the point that the equipment we use has simply worn out.

We need to purchase several new engines and spare parts. Since we are also working on eventually switching to electric power for this event, we will need motors, batteries, chargers and motor controls. While EAA does a great job providing facilities and infrastructure, EAA does not pay for KidVenture's equipment. We must rely on donations for these purchases.
