Explosion Leaves Dan and His Dogs Without a Home
Donation protected
Early in the morning on December 15th, my brother Dan was watching the Flyers replay on his couch with his two dogs, Ruger and Nova. He was thinking about our mom, who was in surgery at the same time. Without a warning, a massive explosion rocked Dan’s rental home. Had he not been sitting directly under a support beam, he would have been crushed by the collapsing debris. The explosion was so fierce it thrust him skyward; his blood was found on the ceiling above where he sat. Nova fell through the floor and into the basement. Ruger was slammed into the wall. Bloodied and in shock, Dan somehow managed to get himself and his dogs out of the house. It is nothing short of a miracle that they survived.
Picking up the pieces after something this disastrous won’t be easy. Most of Dan’s personal possessions are gone. A severe concussion and bone-jarring trauma are a major concern. Medical costs for him, and Ruger and Nova, lie ahead. Dan’s work as a skilled electrician is physically demanding; it is uncertain when he’ll be able to return to his job. Even with renter’s insurance, replacing his possessions – everything from a TV to a toothbrush – a mattress to a microwave – will be expensive. On top of that, his fixed expenses – cell phone bills, insurance premiums, car payments – will continue rolling in. And finding a place to rent that accepts pets is an immediate concern.
Dan is a warrior. He’s faced adversity before and managed to rise above it. But nothing like this – nothing this incomprehensible. Hardworking and proud, accepting kindness from others won’t be easy. It will, however, give him hope. And give him the help he needs to get back on his feet. Knowing others care will be a big part of his healing. Let’s all wrap our arms around Dan with our love and generosity. Then, let’s watch him rise. I know he will.
