Baby Alexander King
Donation protected

He has undergone several issues - jaundice, low blood, and club feet, which are now casted, but the biggest issue has been not gaining weight and not having bowel movements.
After being mis-diagnosed for the first 3 weeks, Alex became gravely ill, losing a large amount of weight, and his stomach became increasingly distended. He was sent to Victoria General Hospital and was immediately admitted into the PICU (pediatric intensive care unit), where it was discovered that his bowel was blocked and a section dieing.
Alex has been diagnosed with Hirschsprung Disease and will be undergoing surgery on November 14 to remove the section of bowel that did not form.
He undergoes daily irrigations of his bowel and is fed through a central line, which has 5 lines running into it. Blood transfusion has brought up his blood and the hope is to have him stabilized and as good as possible for his surgery.
The day to day expense of housing, food and gas, while having to be so far away from home (2 1/2 hours one way) is somewhat daunting. As is attempting to have a somewhat normal life back at home for Alex's 3 1/2 year old big brother. This is even more difficult since it was 3 years that Johnathan, only 5 months old, spent 3 months in the same hospital ward, after battling malrotatiin and volvulous (a rare condition causing a twisted bowel) which was nearly fatal, and resulted in the loss of a large section of bowel and one valve. Johnathan lived with an ostomy bag until surgeons were able to reconnect it. Although both boys suffered from completely unrelated and unexpected illnesses, the deja vu of the situation is difficult on the whole family.
Once Alex has surgery, like his big brother, he will require frequent visits to specialists for the unforseeable future. Aside from being physically exhaustive, this will be financially trying.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Even if you are unable to donate, your prayers and good wishes are invaluable.
We would like to add two thoughts for consideration.
First, never hesitate to seek a second opinion. Both boys were misdiagnosed, and concerns of their parents and family set aside. As a result we came close to losing both. Trust in your gut feelings.
Second, if you have never considered donating blood, please do. The miracle of life you could give someone in need, could be the greatest gift of all.
