It’s with deep vulnerability and humility that I reach out to ask for help during a time that is both incredibly joyful and increasingly overwhelming.

In just 12 short weeks—or perhaps even sooner—we’ll be welcoming our new baby into the world. While that timeline may seem generous, the reality is hitting hard. I’m working two physically demanding jobs, both of which require me to be on my feet with little to no rest. As my pregnancy progresses, the exhaustion has become intense, and I’m also battling debilitating pain (piriformis syndrome) and severe restless leg syndrome that robs me of sleep each night.

I had every intention of working for as long as I possibly could—ideally up until labor—but I’m now facing the hard truth that my body may not allow that. Stepping back from work, however, comes with a serious cost. We are already walking a financial tightrope, and once I’m unable to work, my partner will not be able to carry the full financial load on his own.

As a cosmetologist, I don’t receive paid maternity leave—and neither of my jobs offer solid financial security during this time. My partner also won’t have access to paid paternity leave, which makes things even harder. Our income covers the basics, just enough to get by. And with the holidays falling during my maternity leave, I feel a growing pressure to not let my older children feel the weight of our struggle.

So, with a bit of hesitation but a heart full of hope, I’m reaching out to ask for support. I’ve created a “maternity leave fund” to help ease the financial burden that’s quickly approaching. There are still many baby items we need, but more than anything, we need some breathing room to cover our basic living expenses this fall and winter.
