Supporting Erika Through Her Fight Against Ewing’s Sarcoma

I created this GoFundMe to support a young family—Krissy, Kyle, and their 12-year-old daughter, Erika—who are facing one of the toughest battles of their lives. Erika was recently diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Erika has already undergone a biopsy and will begin eight weeks of intensive chemotherapy before surgery to remove a lump on her ribs. Her treatment plan is daunting: two days of chemo have already been completed, with six more days scheduled next week, and a total of 10 months of treatment ahead. This includes regular visits to SickKids Hospital in Toronto, as well as trips to Centennial Hospital for bloodwork in between treatments.

The family faces significant challenges commuting for Erika’s care. Both parents are unable to drive, making it difficult to rely on programs like Wheels of Hope, which only provides occasional assistance and typically supports just one parent at a time. Public transportation is not an ideal option due to Erika’s condition and being immunocompromised, and the cost of rideshares quickly adds up.

To be closer to SickKids, Erika and her mom have had to relocate from their home in Parry Sound to stay with Erika’s dad in the Toronto area. They’re hoping to secure a place at Ronald McDonald House but have had difficulty getting in. For now, Erika’s mom has paused work to focus entirely on Erika’s care.

Schooling is another adjustment. Erika will hopefully be enrolling in a local school near her dad’s home and also receiving support from Interlink Nursing for at-home education to ensure she keeps up with her studies during treatment.

Erika is understandably scared about the journey ahead, especially her upcoming surgery. But she’s showing incredible strength and resilience as she faces these challenges.
