Evans Mokua Onchwati - Medical Appeal

My name is Major (Rtd) Joab Ngesa, a resident of London in the United Kingdom and a family friend of EVANS MOKUA ONCHWATI, the subject of this Medical Fundraising Appeal.

EVANS MOKUA ONCHWATI is a Kenyan ex-English/IT tutor residing in Foshan City near Guangzhou in Guandong province of Southern China, with his wife Su Hui Ying and son Joab, in what was hitherto, quite retirement.
What began as routine mandatory self isolation, after exhibiting Covid-19-like symptoms of sore throat, congested chest and high fever during the 5th Covid-19 wave that ravaged through many cities in Southern China in early June, escalated to itchy feeling in the anal and perianal areas. This was followed in July, by excruciating pain in the bowels; a difficulty in passing stool and urine which necessitated use of laxatives eliciting painful excretion with accompanying heavy loss of blood.

On August 11th, Evans was evacuated to the nearby Foshan No.1 People’s Hospital where, after numerous tests, he was diagnosed with PERIANAL NECROTIZING FASCIITIS (PNF), a very rare flesh and muscles eating degenerative disease and was promptly admitted for further evaluation and treatment.

On the same day he underwent major surgery to remove the infected tissue and muscles of the anal and perianal areas including parts of the lower bowels.

On August 15th, following a CT scan that revealed more infected flesh and muscles around the lower bowels and thigh areas which were swollen and extremely painful, a second surgical procedure was initiated to remove the affected tissue.

Since Evans's second surgical intervention, he has been put on a regime of broad spectrum antibiotics and other medication; food nutrients fed intravenously and he's kept at the Surgical ICU for close observation and care.

Medical experts describe Perianal Necrotizing Fasciitis as a rare disease, with a very high mortality rate, caused by flesh and muscles eating bacteria that causes excruciating pain in the lower bowels, anal and perianal areas including the groin and upper thighs, making excretion of stool and urine very difficult, if not impossible.
In fact, his doctors at the Foshan No.1 People’s Hospital said it would have been fatal had he delayed 1 more week from visiting the hospital!

"I receive about 8 bottles of various medicines every day including sitting in potassium permanganate solution bath three times a day. Cleaning the wounds and dressing them takes place three times a day. I am not able to do any of the above without assistance from my wife Su Hui Ying and Nurses at the hospital".

"The disease is a dangerous one and they must make sure that it has not spread to other body organs, which may take up to three months. So they will get a scan per week. They are also putting me through Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for 70 minutes daily for five days" says Evans.

Evans is agreeable and has consented to his case being used in any ongoing studies and research to assist in our understanding of causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of this terrible, rare flesh and muscles eating invasive disease with a high mortality rate, and also in order to prevent avoidable future fatalities.

It his prayer and also our hope that the message in this appeal spreads widely, further afield to reach medical charities and research organisations, particularly those that have involved with the study and research on Perianal Necrotizing Fasciitis disease.

In the absence of any medical health insurance, family savings already depleted and with both breadwinners unable to engage in any gainful employment [his devoted wife Su Hui Ying is at Evans's bedside 24/7 nursing him having left son Joab in the care of Grannies], their financial situation is indeed dire, to say the least.

We are now kindly appealing to family, friends and well-wishers to help Evans fight and overcome this terrible disease, by donating any amount of money [and wishes of goodwill] to offset the ever escalating hospital, surgical and medical fees of approximately GBP £950.00 per day and to help ease the financial and emotional burden on his young family.
His doctors estimate that he is bound to kept at the hospital for at least 90 days for monitoring, evaluation and further treatment.

Once again, we urge you to assist in spreading and creating awareness of rare, high-mortality, devastating disease by sharing this message widely on your social networks, social groups such as Chamas, WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Tribel, Instagram, TikTok and other Social Media platforms you may be subscribed so as to reach Medical Research Organisations and Charities far afield.

The target of this Medical Fundraising Campaign is GBP £100,000.
