Message from Jamie Ginsberg:
We all live in a time now more unpredictable than we ever might have dreamt could be possible in the 21st century. Just over a year ago, no one could have imagined the restrictions and limitations that would have been imposed on all our lives. The ability to exercise for more than an hour a day or walk to the shops was stolen from us by an invisible, unrelenting and unforgiving force that took the lives of loved ones away from many of us.
Yet, these restrictions, to some, are not new. There are massively unprivileged children around the world who have seen these incapacities, sicknesses and high mortality rates from far before the COVID19 pandemic. When we bicker about not receiving a complete education, they put themselves in harm's way to get to school every day; when we grumble about not being able to see our friends, they get used to news about their friends' dying in warzones on a weekly basis; when we natter about not being able to eat out in restaurants, they travel miles to collect bacteria-infested water for their family. I myself have seen these terrible instances of horrifically underprivileged children while volunteering in the poorest parts of Southeast Asia. No words can encapsulate what I saw there. Where we feel a nuisance, their lives have been shaped by injustices unimaginable to us today.
And they will absolutely receive the greatest brunts of the pandemic: they will feel the greatest effects of a key missing part of their education, they will feel the worst of the economic strains to come, and they will be the last to receive inoculation, seeing a much slower recovery from the pandemic and into normal life.
So, this is why we believe that, as an institution, we, Eton, have an obligation to help these voiceless, innocent victims with this wonderful charity, Save The Children, that will help restore justice for all the poverty-stricken children around the world, helping to rebuild a post-COVID19 world better.
So, we, a large group of boys spanning multiple year groups at Eton College, will each be rowing (35km), running (25km), or cycling (45km), on behalf of Eton College on the 6th of March to raise money and awareness for 'Saving the Children' so as to help in a global issue and fight for what is right. We hope to lead the charge against this huge global inequity.
For together, we can make sure every child has access to real education, to accessible and healthy food, and to basic medical support for any and all illnesses- to the ability to prosper. And together, we can do this.
We are enormously grateful for any contributions.
Thank you,
Jamie Ginsberg, on behalf of the Eton College Community
