Hurricane ETA-IOTA Relief for Honduras - iMed
Hurricane Eta left destructive aftermath in countries such as Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, and these countries are preparing themselves for the effects of the second Hurricane Iota.
The effects on Honduras were sporadic and included the destruction of smaller rural communities, extreme flooding, deadly mudslides, and the displacement of thousands of Honduran families to local shelters. According to Honduran news outlets, approximately 58 people died in the storm but hundreds of thousands of families were affected. There has been a widespread effort around the country to collect donations for the affected areas as well as help from countries such as Colombia and El Salvador, but the number of resources does not suffice. Considering the potential impact of the second Hurricane Iota and the ill-preparedness of the weak Honduran infrastructural and health systems, the community has decided to pull together to help one another - "solo el pueblo salva al pueblo" (only the community saves the community). We want you to be a part of this helping community by supporting iMed.
iMed is a medical student-run organization with 4 years of experience in academic and charity work in Honduras. iMed is currently focusing its efforts along other organizations to help the affected communities by organizing shipments of necessary resources to various areas around the country with one objective: unite to provide help fast. We are still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, which complicates the logistics and increases the barriers to help, but with enough donations from people like you, we can safely and efficiently reach our impact goals.
We are asking you for donations of any size that will allow us to fund our operations during the next months including:
- Purchase of basic supplies such as hygiene products, blankets, first-aid kits, baby products, clothes, and utilities.
- Purchase of personal protective equipment to protect our volunteers and the now homeless people in the shelters against COVID-19.
- Purchase of non-perishable food items.
- Covering transportation costs of SAFE shipment and delivery to affected communities.
- Preparation for the second storm, Hurricane Iota, which is estimated to be arriving within a matter of days.
